Private postings
By default, all postings are public. For now, if you wish to make your post accessible only to registered site members, begin your post with the line “vl=1″ (view level = registered). You can also restrict viewing to only those posting by beginning your post with “vl=4″ or make it totally private with “vl=10″.
Backposting
To backpost: when writing your journal entry, in the right column are several options you can apply to it, including the “timestamp”. By clicking on the +, an interactive menu will be revealed in which you can set the date for which the current entry should be set. Notice also you can set a password for that entry: only those you share the password with will be able to read it.
Copyright issues
This is a complicated matter, but the basic rule is to upload only items (video, photo, mp3, visual, sound, or text) for which you do hold copyright (you will retain the copyright, of course!). Items requiring copyright release must be okayed by the administrator(s). When in doubt, provide links to external sites. That being said, the site may provide a supportive environment for journalists to get feedback on the development of compositions and/or performance skills.
How to post mp3s and use the mp3 player
- You need the URL for the mp3, if it’s already uploaded on myspace or elsewhere.
- If you upload your mp3 here using the Upload button on your post’s page, after uploading successfully (for now, the size limit is 2MB) the post editor gives you an option of putting the link to the mp3 into the post, which I suggest to doing so you can copy and paste the URL if you wish to use the mp3 player. If you leave the link in the post, readers clicking on the link will get a new page with only their default web mp3 player launching your mp3.
- If you wish to use the mp3 plugin that comes with this site, just put [mp3]URL.of.your.mp3.file[\mp3] into your post where you want the player to appear. The URL must end with the filename of your mp3, and the filename itself must end with mp3, for example: http://logicallysound.com/guitarcirclejournals/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/kewl.mp3
- Note in this last example that the upload directory has subdirectories where uploads are put into a subfolder with the year and month that the file was uploaded. The URL up to the word “uploads” is the same for all uploads to this site.
How to post pictures
- First: is it necessarily a private picture? In other words, if you can store it at flickr.com rather than uploading it here, please do that. After uploading it to flickr.com, then you can get the url for the picture from your browser (on my Mac, I just control-click on the image, open it in a separate tab window, and then select and copy the resulting url).
- If you don’t want to share your picture with the world, and wish to upload it here at logicallysound dot com, then continue reading. Caveat: disk space is limited, for now there is plenty. One option, and not your only one: help pay for additional disk space when the need arises.
- Begin to edit your post that will contain the photo (a link to the Edit Post page is in the sidebar).
- Scroll down the page and upload your picture file.
- Then you need to know the http address for the photo file at flickr.com. If you uploaded it here, it should be something like http://logicallysound.com/guitarcirclejournals/wp-content/uploads/<year>/<month> where <year> is the number of the year, <month> is the number of the month and, of course, <filename> is the name you gave the uploaded the file.
- In your post, either use the little picture icon in the “visual editor” that should help insert the picture (you have to give what the http address for the photo is) OR you can click on the tab saying “Code” and use the img tab that asks you for the address … just follow the prompts.
- You may find it useful for later searching to categorize the post as having a Media -Photo in it, by choosing this from the sidebar next to the visual post editor.
- Contact me if you need further help with the photos.
